Use of Appropriate Medications for Asthma

Percentage of patients 5-64 years of age who were identified as having persistent asthma and were appropriately prescribed medication during the measurement year. Report five age stratifications (5-11 years, 12-18 years, 19-50 years, 51-64 years, and total).

There are 5 denominators each having 1 numerator in this measure and this translates to 5 sets in total.

Denominator 1: All patients 5-64 years of age with at least 1 encounter during the meaningful-use reporting period and having one of the following ICD-10 codes selected in ASSESSMENT/DIAGNOSIS section on the ENCOUNTER form:
J44.0, J44.1, J44.9, J45.20, J45.21, J45.22, J45.30, J45.31, J45.32, J45.40, J45.41, J45.42, J45.50, J45.51, J45.52, J45.901, J45.902, J45.909, J45.990, J45.991, J45.998

Numerator 1: Patients in the above mentioned list to whom long term control medication or treatment was prescribed during the reporting period. UniCharts looks for the custom code QM036A: [Quality Measure] Persistent asthma medications, long term control medication/treatment prescribed (4015F) within the PROCEDURES/SERVICES section on the ENCOUNTER form as the required documentation.

Denominator 2: All patients 5-11 years of age with at least 1 encounter during the meaningful-use reporting period and having one of the ICD-10 codes listed above

Numerator 1: As above.

Denominator 3: All patients 12-18 years of age with at least 1 encounter during the meaningful-use reporting period and having one of the ICD-10 codes listed above

Numerator 1: As above.

Denominator 4: All patients 19-50 years of age with at least 1 encounter during the meaningful-use reporting period and having one of the ICD-10 codes listed above

Numerator 1: As above.

Denominator 5: All patients 51-64 years of age with at least 1 encounter during the meaningful-use reporting period and having one of the ICD-10 codes listed above

Numerator 1: As above.

Exceptions: None

Note: The system will automatically search for patients with ICD-10 codes J68.4, J98.2, J98.3 (Emphysema), J44.0, J44.1, J44.9 (COPD), E84* (Cystic fibrosis) and J96* (Acute respiratory failure) for exclusion from denominator
